We Fight Monsters is a Memphis-based nonprofit that goes into some of the hardest places in America to pull people out of trafficking and addiction — and then stays with them for the long road back. The organization was founded by Ben and Jessica Owen, who came up out of homelessness and addiction themselves and turned that experience into a mission for the people still in it.
Rescue, Recover, Restore
Their model runs in three stages. Rescue brings people out of crisis, working alongside law enforcement partners and answering calls for help. Recovery provides medically supervised detox, stabilization, and residential support so people can get clean and get steady. Restoration is the long part — months of housing, life skills, job training in trades, agriculture, and the culinary arts, and real wage-earning work, so people leave with a foundation under them instead of a cliff.
A big piece of that work is what they call Buy Back the Block: taking over former drug houses and renovating them into sober, stable homes for people rebuilding their lives — including women who have survived trafficking, and their children. Where a neighborhood once lost ground, families get a place to stay together or come back together.
It is heavy work, done by people who know the territory firsthand — folks who have walked through it themselves. Their guiding line is simple: no life is beyond redemption.
